Samsung and Hyundai successfully test 5G "RedCap" for IoT with private 5G in factories.

Samsung Electronics and Hyundai of South Korea announced on February 26, 2025, the successful end-to-end testing of the new RedCap (Reduced Capability) 5G standard in a private 5G network at the Hyundai plant in Ulsan. This is the first time in the industry that RedCap has been tested on a private 5G for Industry 4.0, and was unveiled during MWC2025, held March 3-6, 2012.

RedCap is a 5G-based communication standard for the IoT that reduces equipment costs and power consumption by reducing 5G functions. It is also expected to be used as a replacement for 4G-based IoT systems in the future.

The test was conducted to verify RedCap's capabilities and integration performance across the entire network, from vehicle inspection terminals to the private 5G core, radio, and management system. Samsung's private 5G network was integrated with Hyundai's D Scan vehicle inspection equipment to test real-time transmission of vehicle inspection data. Faster and more reliable communication was achieved compared to conventional Wi-Fi systems.

Based on the success of this test, Hyundai plans to install Red Cap private 5G networks in more of its newest EV manufacturing facilities in the future. These facilities are expected to begin operations in the first half of 2026.
RedCap and eRedCap (enhanced RedCap), which further reduces the maximum transmission speed to about 10 Mbps, are currently under technical study for introduction by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in Japan.
