Vodafone UK and Ericsson Sweden announced on March 11, 2025 that they have successfully reduced the daily power consumption of 5G radio equipment (Radio Unit) by 33% after conducting a trial of AI solutions for 5G networks in several areas of London. The trial utilized Ericsson's AI and machine learning software and marked an important milestone in the sustainability aspect of 5G networks.
Vodafone UK introduced three key use cases in this trial: "5G Deep Sleep "*1, "4G Cell Sleep Mode Orchestration "*2, and "Radio Power Efficiency Heatmap "*3. These functions were combined to measure, predict, and optimize the power consumption of the entire network, powering off components during low-traffic periods and quickly restarting them as needed.
Andrea Dona, Chief Network Officer of Vodafone UK, commented that "the reduction in power consumption at this trial site is a major economic and environmental achievement," and that "as we build 5G coverage across the UK, it shows that we can continue to improve network efficiency We are very pleased with the results," commented Andrea Dona.
1 AI prediction algorithms operate radios in ultra-low power sleep mode according to traffic. Technology that can reduce power consumption by up to 70% during low-traffic periods.
2 A technology that creates an operating model of a network cell (communication area covered by a base station) and automatically adjusts the sleep state of 4G cells to maintain communication quality while reducing power consumption.
3 Technology that supports efficient operation by visualizing the power usage status of the entire network.
