On March 27, 2025, 5G Americas, a U.S.-based 5G-related industry association, and Omdia, a British research firm, issued a new press release on the status of global 5G penetration. In it, they revealed that the number of global 5G connections (the number of devices connected to a 5G network) surpassed 2.25 billion in 2024. 5G connections are expanding at a rapid pace, four times faster than 4G LTE over a similar time period.
According to the release, the North American market is driving the expansion of 5G connections, with the number of connections in 2024 growing 67% over the previous year to 289 million, bringing 5G population coverage to 77%, with the same number of commercial 5G networks and 4G LTE networks deployed in the country. Meanwhile, 5G is also expanding rapidly in the Latin American market, where the number of connections has almost doubled year over year to 76 million. However, 4G LTE still plays a central role in this market, accounting for 74% of all mobile connections.
The release also predicts that the number of 5G connections worldwide will reach 8.3 billion by 2029, accounting for 59% of all mobile connections. IoT devices are also expected to see significant growth in the overall number of mobile connections, adding 438 million new connections in 2024. The number of global IoT connections stands at 3.6 billion.
