On April 14, 2025, the European Commission announced a €104 million (approximately ¥17 billion) funding round to promote research and development related to 6G. This is the fourth round of the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU), a public-private partnership between the Commission and the telecommunications industry. The call for applications opened on May 22, 2012, and will close on September 18, 2012.

This is the first call for proposals under the SNS JU's 2025 Research and Innovation (R&I) Work Program. The program aims to establish Europe's leading position in 6G technology innovation and digital infrastructure development, with bold research guidelines that include the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, photonics systems, and telecom infrastructure, edge, and cloud technologies.

To date, SNS JU has awarded a cumulative €500 million to 80 projects across Europe. Erzsébet Fitori, executive director of the SNS JU, said, "This work program is an important step in establishing Europe's leadership in 6G," adding, "By bringing together European industry, academia, and research institutions, we are building a European-led, next-generation digital society that focuses on sustainability, security, and social impact, not just technology development. By bringing together European industry, academia, and research institutions, we will go beyond mere technology development to build the next generation of a European-led digital society focused on sustainability, security, and social impact.
