U.S. telecommunications giant AT&T announced on July 16, 2025, that it has begun rolling out 5G RedCap (Reduced Capability), a next-generation 5G technology suitable for industrial IoT devices, across the United States.
RedCap is a 5G standard specifically designed for medium to low bandwidth applications such as smartwatches, industrial sensors, medical devices, etc. It is faster and lower latency than 4G-based communication standards for IoT, such as LTE-M and NB-IoT, while also being power efficient.
AT&T plans to work with communication module manufacturers such as Semtech, Telit Cinterion, and Rhino Mobility to certify 5G RedCap-compatible modules that meet "low power, low cost, and low bandwidth" requirements.
Last year, research firm ABI Research predicted that shipments of IoT RedCap modules will reach 80 million units between 2024 and 2029.
Jason Sikes, VP of Devices at AT&T, commented, "RedCap will be a key enabler of the next wave of innovation in IoT.
