Workshop on the Integration of Advanced Industrial Technology and Advanced Telecommunications Technology (IX) (Vol. 9)

Posted on 2025/09/09

timetable (Titles omitted)

Part 1 (13:40-15:00) Lecture: "Fusion of Wireless and Light

Opening Remarks
Takehiro NAKAMURA
ODAIBA IX Core Leader / NTT DOCOMO Chief Standardization Officer
Session1
Masahisa Kawashima

Co-evolution of Light and Radio for AI Society
Masahisa KAWASHIMA
IOWN Technical Director, NTT IOWN Promotion Office / Chair, IOWN Global Forum Technical WG

In this session, IOWN Global Forum Open APN will explain the evolution of optical transmission infrastructure (hair thinning and software-defined), and then introduce the activities to evolve wireless access networks and edge computing infrastructure for the AI era by utilizing this new optical transmission infrastructure. An overview of the activities will be presented (details will be explained by Mr. Inohara next)
Session2 (Session 2)
Ryo Inohara

How APNs, mobile networks, and computing resources work together to maximize millimeter wave performance
Ryo INOHARA
Group Leader, Optical Access Network Group, Optical Division, KDDI R&D Laboratories, KDDI Corporation / Leader, IOWN Global Forum IMN-TF (IOWN for Mobile Network Task Force)

The IOWN Global Forum on APNs, which are indispensable for realizing high-capacity, high-reliability, low-latency communications, discusses the IOWN Global Forum on APNs from the perspective of maximizing millimeter wave performance, including their application to mobile networks such as "Mobile Fronthaul over APNs" and their coordination with computing resources. The discussion will cover the details and future prospects of the IOWN Global Forum from the viewpoint of maximizing millimeter-wave performance. KDDI Research Institute's efforts to promote millimeter wave will also be introduced.
Session3 (Session 3)
Daijiro Yoshii

Three elements for millimeter waves to come into their own
Daijiro YOSHII
株式会社村田製作所/推し活×5G(ミリ波・ローカル5G)プロジェクトリーダー

What we have learned through specific verification activities is that public network millimeter wave shows its true potential in situations where the three elements of "extraordinary," "densely populated areas," and "uplink utilization" are all present. Mr. Nakamura, ODAIBA IX Core Leader, and Mr. Masakazu Shirota (Qualcomm Japan G.K.), sub-leader of ODAIBA IX Core, will join us for a discussion on how this know-how can be applied to local 5G millimeter wave (28GHz).
Session4 (Session 4)
Katsutoshi Ito

Use cases for millimeter wave and APN collaboration being considered at the IOWN Global Forum
Katsutoshi ITOH
Chair, IOWN Global Forum Use Case Working Group / Head of the Lund Technology Laboratory, Sony Corporation

Real-time data collection, processing, and distribution will enable the integration of the real world and virtual space, making processing more remote, automated, and predictable. To realize such a future vision, millimeter-wave communications and APNs are attracting attention as key technologies that support ensuring end-to-end performance, including everything from transmission to computing. In this presentation, we will discuss expectations for millimeter wave communications and APN, introducing use cases being considered at the IOWN Global Forum, including applications in large-scale chemical plants and stadiums. It will also address its potential as a communications infrastructure to support immersive experiences and enhanced interactivity in the next generation of entertainment promoted by Sony.

Part 2 (15:15-17:00) Workshop: Experiencing Millimeter Waves and APNs

The event will be held at docomo R&D OPEN LAB ODAIBA with 20 millimeter wave terminals, millimeter wave base stations, APN line termination equipment, millimeter wave related measurement equipment provided by Keysight, and a video camera + transmitter (PDT-FP1) provided by Sony, to actually experience millimeter wave in various ways. The participants will experience millimeter wave in various forms. IOWN Global Forum members who presented the topics in the first part will join us to discuss and brainstorm possible use cases of "APN + millimeter wave".
