When crossed with mobility, information and communication supports the advancement of automated driving, and when combined with energy, it supports the realization of microgrids and VPPs (virtual power plants). Furthermore, the fusion of ICT, mobility, and energy will lead to new social infrastructures such as smart cities and Mobility as a Service (MaaS). Information and communications are truly becoming the foundation that supports the diverse evolution of society.
The Information Network Research and Development Center (INC) of Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Sumitomo Electric") is promoting research and development of information and communication technologies that support infrastructure and industry, with an eye on these convergence areas. We are engaged in research and development of products and services that support a safe, comfortable, and green society, focusing on three main areas: optical networks, information processing, and wireless systems," said Kazutaka Kawamoto, the center's director.

In the optical network area, we are developing ultra high-speed network devices for the access to metro market in anticipation of the next generation information and telecommunications infrastructure "IOWN". In the information processing area, we are working on "smart device managers" that integrate and analyze data obtained from network devices and vehicles. In the wireless systems area, we are conducting research and development on advanced use of radio waves, especially millimeter waves, with the IoT market/factory and smart city markets as our main targets. The main development targets are "traffic infrastructure sensors," "xG terminals/next-generation Wi-Fi terminals," "analog RoF," and "DAS (distributed antennas).
Traffic Infrastructure Sensors are indispensable sensors for the realization of a traffic digital twin that contributes to traffic safety as a social infrastructure. We are developing traffic infrastructure sensors using millimeter-wave radar and other technologies to achieve Vision Zero, the ultimate goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries in road traffic systems. These sensors can detect pedestrians and vehicles over long distances with high accuracy, and will lead to more sophisticated control of road signals and other functions," said Kawamoto.
In the area of xG terminals/next-generation Wi-Fi terminals, we are developing terminals that support next-generation wireless communications such as 6G and Wi-Fi 8 to support DX in factories and offices. We are developing terminals that meet the requirements of industrial terminals," explains Kawamoto, "including support for a wide range of temperature and weather conditions so that they can be used in factories and outdoors, and a built-in GPU capable of edge processing. We are also working on the development of "analog RoF," which enables transmission of millimeter wave and other radio signals over optical fiber as analog signals, and the miniaturization and low power consumption of distributed antennas (DAS), which facilitate distributed placement of millimeter wave antennas inside buildings and other locations.
The XGMF-ODAIBA IX Core Workshop (Vol. 10) on November 13, 2025 will be held in Sumitomo Electric's facility in Osaka. This is an opportunity to witness first-hand the efforts of Sumitomo Electric's Information Network R&D Center in a workshop format. We hope you will join us to experience the state-of-the-art of millimeter wave and other technological developments that will serve as the foundation for promoting DX in social infrastructure and industry, and to have an opportunity to think together with Sumitomo Electric and the participants about how millimeter waves will be utilized in the future. Please note that only XGMF member companies are eligible to participate in this event, and no live streaming will be available.
