German automotive giant BMW has opened a new EV plant in Debrecen, Hungary, with AI and 5G at its core. The company positions this plant as the "world's first AI car factory" and will begin production in late October.
The plant combines private and public 5G to connect thousands of robots, cameras, sensors, and tablets with low latency. The company's proprietary quality control platform, AIQX, can detect defects in real time and with high accuracy. In addition, digital twin technology optimizes logistics, assembly, and layout.
The 5G network at the site is being built by Magyar Telekom, a major local telecommunications company. However, the wireless equipment vendor has not been disclosed at this time.
BMW is one of the automakers that is seriously committed to utilizing private 5G networks. The company has already deployed private 5G in its home country of Dingolfing and its production facilities in Leipzig, Landshut, Spartanburg, USA, and Shenyang, China.
The company plans to gradually roll out this AI system to its Munich plant and other European locations, positioning the Debrecen plant as a model case for the entire network.
