The European Union (EU) is considering legal action to phase out China's Huawei and ZTE products from member states' 5G and next-generation networks. The aim is to unify the EU-wide response, which has varied from country to country, against a backdrop of security concerns.
Until now, each country in the EU has decided on its own how to handle Huawei products, and some countries, such as Spain and Greece, continue to use Huawei products. On the other hand, France, Sweden, and other countries have already adopted a policy of elimination, and unification of responses has been an issue.
Bloomberg reports that European Commission Vice President Henna Virkkunen is pushing for the regulation. In addition to products for 5G and next-generation networks, the regulation may also include products for fixed broadband networks such as optical fiber.
In addition, the European Commission is considering measures to curb dependence on Chinese equipment in its support of telecommunications infrastructure outside the EU. Specifically, a proposal has emerged to provide financial support through the Global Gateway, the EU's foreign investment framework, on the condition that Chinese equipment is not used.
