Ericsson of Sweden announced on April 14, 2025 that Newmont, a major U.S. gold mining company, has selected its private 5G The 5G network will be used to remotely operate a fleet of bulldozer vehicles at the Cadia mine, the largest underground mine in Australia.
According to Ericsson, the Wi-Fi that Newmont had been utilizing was often problematic due to unstable connections and the inability to connect more than two machines within 100 meters of each other. The new private 5G solution utilizes Ericsson's integrated antenna radio and Massive MIMO technology, allowing a single radio to cover a 2.5 km wide area processing tailings left after concentrating. It also has an uplink speed that can handle up to 12 bulldozers. This will greatly improve employee safety and machine operating efficiency.
Chris Twaddle, Newmont's director of process control, networking, and operational communications, said that Ericsson's private 5G network "provides us with a scalable, high-performance solution that delivers the coverage we need and protects our workforce," and that "it will help Tier 1 mines*, and fulfills our long-term vision in DX to utilize 5G for smart mining".
A world-class large-scale mine that is rich in resources and capable of long-term operation.
