Finland's Nokia announced on May 6, 2025, that it has signed a contract to install a self-owned wireless network (Privay Wireless) for the fleet of Danish shipping giant AP Moller Maersk. Maersk will install the wireless network on 450 vessels in its fleet, which will be used for real-time cargo tracking, increased supply chain visibility, and improved operational efficiency.

The new self-owned wireless network is designed to support a large number of IoT devices and ensure total operability between private and public networks. This will enable the monitoring of customer cargo from sea to port and land, and will be especially valuable in the transportation of perishable goods such as produce, where temperature and humidity control is critical.

Kjeld Dittmann, Head of Ship and Cargo Connectivity at Maersk, said, "The platform is designed to support thousands of IoT devices and will provide optimal performance in refrigerated and frozen container tracking and fleet-wide IoT operations. This upgrade is comparable to the transition from 2G to 4G," he commented.

The deployment of the new wireless network is already underway and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.
