Google Fiber (GFiber), a Google-owned fiber optic operator, announced on June 30, 2025, that it has demonstrated network slicing technology for in-home networks with Finland's Nokia through the application of 5G core technology to home broadband, The goal is to achieve a communication experience optimized for each application.

In this test, two game consoles were operated on a single home network, and one of them was assigned a dedicated slice (a virtual dedicated lane) for game traffic. As a result, the game machine assigned the slice was able to maintain stable performance even in an environment where the line was intentionally congested.

Network slicing is one of the typical features of 5G SA (standalone), a technology that can provide differentiated bandwidth, latency, and reliability based on application and user. While it has been deployed mainly for industrial applications and corporate services, it is expected to address diverse needs in home broadband, such as gaming, remote work, and AI applications.

GFiber also mentioned a mechanism for automatically applying slicing on a per-transaction basis (transactional slices). If this technology becomes a reality, for example, online banking logins could be more secure by automatically assigning dedicated slices.

The two companies have not disclosed the timing of the commercial deployment of the technology at this time.
